Academic curiosity or industry's secret weapon?

Functional programming languages and techniques have a reputation as being an academic curiosity, but they've been used very successfully in industry. I'll talk a bit about the history of functional programming, how it differs from imperative programming, what it's commonly used for, and what its advantages and disadvantages are.
