Intercom is one place for every team in an internet business to communicate with customers, personally, at scale—on your website, inside web and mobile apps, and by email.
Location: Dublin, Ireland
DESCRIPTION
Intercom is a great place to work. We care about people (you, our customers, our team mates). And we've just raised $35M in the Series C funding round!
Our Infrastructure team is responsible for evolving and maintaining the platform on which the Intercom product lives and ensuring the reliability, performance, scalability, efficiency and security of Intercom as a whole.
We're looking for a super smart, ambitious, hardworking, humble and fun individual to be our first dedicated security engineer.
You will get to work directly with our product and infrastructure engineering teams on in interesting mix of application and infrastructure security projects. This is a great opportunity to learn and have impact at the same time while moving really fast and shipping code to production many times every day.
Our entire infrastructure and product engineering teams are collocated in Dublin, so you'll own the most important and challenging projects for our business, and work face to face with all the people you need to succeed.
At Intercom, we'll challenge and support you to do the best work of your career. Some examples of the types of projects you could work on:
70% of time = help evolve our infrastructure and product to be more secure
This will mean proposing new system/architecture changes and helping our product and infrastructure teams build things, for example figure out how to encrypt at rest the contents of messages that our customers send to their users, with unique, per-customer encryption keys, that are easily rotatable.
30% of time = help our product team develop code more securely over time
This will mean educating people, performing security design/code reviews, etc. An example project might involve helping a product team create a threat model for a new service and conducting (or organising to outsource) a security code review for the new service code.

Mobile Engineering at Intercom
Our product teams are multidisciplinary with design, frontend and backend engineering combined. While specialisation is important, we discourage pigeonholing. Our most effective people work across design and implementation, making the right technology decisions to build the best product.
One of our senior engineers joining from a major PaaS provider described his experience as “Before, I saw customers through a very large telescope. Now I’m right beside them.” We love the satisfaction of hearing how happy our customers are with what we build for them. Not only are they passionate about Intercom but they believe in our mission to make web business personal and love using our product to be personal with their customers. We use Intercom to talk with them too.
We work to maintain a healthy balance of strong senior engineers and smart junior engineers eager to develop their skills. We believe Intercom is a place to come and deliver career-defining achievements.
As an engineer you will:
Contribute to our roadmaps and influence their direction. This is more than a technical role, you’ll be a creative product and technical contributor.
Contribute to our technical architecture as we grow. We scale to service requests from all our customers’ customers. We’re growing and so are they.
Make our mobile SDKs even easier to integrate and run fast and reliably with a polished native interface.
Build the apps that allow our customers communicate with their customers from anywhere.
Have the opportunity to work across our entire product, not just on our mobile software.
Be proud of what you work on, obsess about the quality of the work you produce. Join us to do the best work of your career.
Have regular opportunity and support for career growth. We are constantly growing and forming new teams. For those who are motivated to lead, we hugely bias internal promotions to Engineering Lead and Engineering Director roles.

Care about agility as much you care for scalability and availability. Continuous deployment keeps us focused on incremental releases. Even our biggest technical achievements roll out piece by piece, feature flagged out of sight. Projects are kept short and tightly scoped. Teams build a weekly cadence of releases.
Ship a change to production on your first day and a significant public release in your first week. That “day one” change is automatically deployed to production along with 80 other deployments (on average) each weekday.
Be proud of what you work on, obsess about the quality of the work you produce. Join us to do the best work of your career.
